Special Lecture on Use of Philosophy in Everyday Life

Department of Arts, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, Manipal University Jaipur, organized a guest lecture on 29th August 2019 The special lecture was delivered by Prof. D. N. Tiwari, Professor of Philosophy at Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. Professor Tiwari delivered the lecture on the topic, "Use of Philosophy in Everyday Life".

Deliberating on the importance of Philosophical thinking in everyday life, Prof. Tiwari, highlighted the predominant mode in which "thinking" is utilized today in our technology dominated society. He bemoaned the reduction of the use of our thinking skills to quantitative skills of reasoning. To contrast the devalued use of thinking faculty in popular imagination, he outlined the therapeutic use of thinking faculty in the realm of philosophical domain. He urged the young minds who were assembled there for the lecture to practice philosophical thinking in everyday lives so as to restore the dignity of humankind as thinking beings.

The lecture was followed by a brief Q & A session whereby students got an opportunity to interact with the speaker. Professor Devendra Nath Tiwari has been a Visiting Professor on ICCR's Chair MGI, Moka, Mauritius from 2014-2017. Along with his professorship at BHU, he serves also as Adjunct Professor at International Centre of Spiritual Studies, Islamic University of Science & Technology, Awantipura, Kashmir. Prof. N. D. Mathur, Director, School of Humanities and Social Sciences welcomed the guest-speaker with a Welcome Address. He projected the importance of harmony in our day to day lives, and the part played by philosophical thinking in harboring it.

Prof. Richa Arora, Head of the Department, Dept. of Arts, introduced the guest speaker by outlining the achievements that dot his career that spans across four decades. The event was coordinated by Prof. Mani Sachdev, faculty of Philosophy, Dept. of Arts, who concluded the event with a Vote of Thanks.
